Sgt Hammond was murdered because not only was he a Palestine Police officer, but he had a close friendship with a Jewish girl. They were threatened and she was sent to Reg's mother in England for safety while Reg continued his police duties. He and a friend, Scot, were fired on as they left a café and crossed Jaffa Road, Jerusalem. Sgt Hammond died later that night, Scot was injured.
Sgt Hammond was a good friend of Palestine Police Sergeant Tom Quelch whose son was born a few months after the murder. Sgt Quelch named his son Reginald Thomas in memory of his good friend, Reg.
