Handala, Naji al-Ali

These keys represent the house keys and deeds of property ownership that Palestinian refugees took with them when forced into exile. They represent the hope that one day the Palestinians will be able to return to their Homeland.

Naji al-Ali was a famous Palestinian cartoonist who targeted everyone: Palestinians, Zionists and Western governments alike. He fearlessly drew attention to all their hypocrisy and corruption through the character of Handala, a small boy with his back to the viewer. He was murdered in London in 1987, possibly on Arafat's orders.
