Ein Karem, just outside Jerusalem

drawing of many armed men in village

"In the village of Ein Karem, the birthplace of John the Baptist. Every able-bodied Arab carries a gun of some description. As they sit in their open-air cafés, drinking coffee and playing cards or dominoes, shots crack and ripple overhead from squads being battle-trained in the surrounding hills by mysterious European instructors. There is an almost unbearable feeling of waiting for something to happen."
