The Northland

The Northland, an old US icebreaker which had served in WWII, had sailed with the Paducah from Bulgaria with over 2,500 on board—the Russians had been happy to ensure a smooth departure in order to undermine British policy. It was intercepted on 2nd October 1947 by Cheviot and Chaplet. Some passengers had resisted arrest and there had been a few injuries.

The customary press reception for arrival in Haifa had been organized, a fact commented on to British forces by some of the passengers. No opportunity was missed to influence public opinion in the US and the anti-British media there were happy to oblige.
