Removing illegal immigrants from ship

soldiers taking people off ship

Removing illegal immigrants from ships was not a duty enjoyed by British Forces. It was always difficult and unpleasant. Many of the passengers were in a very poor state and had to be stretchered off as in this photo. Many were also extremely verbally and physically abusive.

Dennis and Gerald Skinner, whose photo this is, are twins who were both stationed in Haifa with 6th Airborne. Dennis escorted passengers off the ships and on to Royal Naval vessels which would take them to Cyprus. Gerald was mostly in the office but sometimes had to go down to the harbour for escort duties.
