From Durban troopships went north to Egypt or East to India and/or the Far East and Australia. Consequently it was often necessary for units to disembark at Durban and wait for a convoy going in the direction they needed. Wilfrid Paine made the most of his stay in Durban before embarking on the Nieuw Amsterdam for Port Tewfiq. One hopes the voyage was better than GI Gallagher's truly appalling journey in the same vessel across a storm-benighted Atlantic from New York to Greenock in 1944.
